華星冰室
Retro café
DPDdweller | Oct 29 2011
This is a fancy cha chan teng with checkered floor and photos of celebrities on the wall. Always packed. The scrambled eggs and milk tea are the signature dishes. Both miles better than most of the cha chan teng in Hong Kong. The eggs are smooth and creamy without that overly buttery taste. Best eaten with the thick buttery toast. The tea smells divine. Like!

Chesa
Chesa
DPDdweller | Oct 23 2011
This restaurant reminds me of a cottage in the wood in Europe. Very nice décor. The raclette cheese was out of this world. Served with potatoes and a side of olives, gherkins, and pickled onions to be eaten with the cheese. Yum! The fondue is also mouthwatering and delicious. It has a creamy and light sweet flavour, and blends well with plain sour dough. Last but not least, the veal with mushrooms and cream sauce was amazing. The veal was tender, and the sauce creamy. Delicious!

My best friend's all time favourite Italian in Central. I like it but it is far too expensive for everyday dining, even monthly dining! It is a restaurant for special occasions.

Business lunch
DPDdweller | Oct 4 2011
Flashy décor, overpriced menu, attentive service and excellent food is the formula for good business dining. The wine list looks tempting but we never order wine for lunch. Will go for dinner some time.

Menu expanded, many kinds of toro cuts to choose from. Aside from conveyor belt, better to order a la carte and have the sushi freshly prepared. The wagyu beef seared sushi is so good!

Delightful Sunday brunch

We had no reservation but were seated in comfy chairs which overlooked the Chinese restaurant. Champagne was served continuously throughout the meal. Buffet style starters include caviar, snow crab legs and other fresh seafood.

Large pieces of dim sum. Fresh tasting. Won't put a hole I your pocket. Highlights are the mini Cha siu bao and spicy wonton. We love the rustic look and atmosphere. Getting a table on weekends is tough.

Too hot for summer
DPDdweller | Sep 16 2011
I sneaked out of the office at 3pm to try the ramen. I now understand why people queue up for a bowl of noodles. It was so comforting that I wanted to go back the next day. Too hot for summer but during winter it is heavenly!

Tasty Set Lunch
DPDdweller | Sep 15 2011
I really liked the set lunch. The buffet appetizers and desserts were few in number but high in quality - much better than GOLD, in my opinion, and the main courses were nicely done. It's not the cheapest set lunch in the neighborhood.

Olé Spanish Restaurant & Wine Bar
Enjoyable meal
DPDdweller | Aug 17 2011
A really big bunch of my friends invited my for lunch at Olé Spanish Restaurant & Bar. Oh I was really excited as it had been on my wish list for a long while already. On the day I went to the restaurant with the friend who made the reservation beforehand. We had to hike up Ice House Street which was quite a pain under the summer heat! And I was at a loss of where the entrance was (thanks to the rather inconspicuous looking thick wooden door). But once we were inside, we were almost enchanted. I've never been to Spain but I felt like I was there at Olé. Since we were a large group (more than a dozen) we were assigned a long table at the back of the restaurant and thus I got a pretty good view of the whole restaurant. The "Special Lunch of the Day" seemed to be a bargain. For just $158 (+10% service charge) you could choose any soup or salad, a main dish and a dessert from the a la carte menu, complete with tea of coffee. If you want a Paella, you'd have to share between 2 people. (You'll know the reason later, read on...) Since the paella took some 30 minutes to make, we decided to order it first. We went for the classic Paella de marisco (Traditional Spanish seafood rice, a la carte price $420). I picked another traditional Spanish soup, Gazpacho Andaluz (Traditional cold vegetable soup, $70) and my friend chose a salad Ensalada de pez espada en escabeche (Swordfish salad, $95). After we've made our orders and while waiting for our other friends to come, came bread and tapas. I loved the warm and crispy bread, and the stuffed olives as well. There were also potato salad, and meat balls and sardines in tomato sauce, which were good too. My gazpacho was cool (not to the degree of cold though), smooth, and refreshing. I tried a bit of the swordfish from my friend's salad but the flesh was firm and sort of bland and I didn't like it too much. Later wer managed to persuade some of our group to order the Cochillino asado a la Segoviana (Suckling pig baked in the oven the Segovia way, $255) so that we could share that as well. I didn't manage to taste a lot of the paper-thin golden crisp skin, but that little bit was still very tasty, and the meat underneath was tender and juicy, retaining the pork's natural flavors. And finally here it was - the Paella! It was like huge and could actually feed more than 2 people even if you eat just that. The paellera (the pan in which the paella is cooked) looked like a big Chinese "wok" and thus the passionately named 西班牙大鑊飯 (!!) in Chinese. In this one it got prawns, mussels, cuttlefish, and also some vegetables like peppers, chickpeas and beans complete with a wedge of lemon. The rice was moist and soft and colored to a bright loveable yellow with saffron, and infused with the appetising aroma of garlic. Even better than the seafood that was inevitably the frozen variety. Still I think it is one of the better paellas in town (though it is not something I eat all the time or a lot). As time was running short and everyone was starting to feel the pressure of having to head back to work soon (we all hate Mondays do we?), we'd better go on to dessert. That was another separate menu with things from classic Spanish stuff like churros to even tiramisu (but I don't know of a Spanish version of that). My choice was Crema Catalana, or Catalan cream ($55). It was actually Crème Brûlée of Spain, and tasted similar. I liked the feeling of cracking the caramelised sugar on the top . Just a side note, this dessert originated from Catalonia in Spain, which has just passed a law that banned bull fighting in the region. And after finishing the coffee, I really had to go. I had an enjoyable meal at Olé which was worth my three cheers!

AVA Restaurant Slash Bar
Fun experience
DPDdweller | Aug 5 2011
Table by the window offers a panoramic view of the harbour and HK side - beautiful. To start I had "Garlic" which was a creamy soup served in a tea pot. Very fun to watch and then eat. For main I had the Black Truffles, served 3 ways. It was served on a tray with 3 porcelain pots. Very cute! Dessert I had a lemon cake, which is one of their signature dishes. I would definately recommend this place for a special occasion as the view, atmosphere and service are all very good. One more thing is that one of my friends is vegetarian and they had a "Garden" menu for vegetarians with decent choices! Will be back for the next fireworks show for a great dinner and beautiful view.

The location is unbeatable
DPDdweller | Aug 4 2011
t is 3 minutes from my office and there is never a line! That should tell you something, but in actual fact the food is not bad. Laksa might not be very authentic if you compare it with the ones in Singapore but it's good enough. Also for ifc it is not expensive. What most people don't know is they serve breakfast - traditional Singaporean breakfast with soft boiled eggs and toast! Pretty good.

Usually quite packed during the week but on Sunday, it's easy to score a table. Also the tables are further apart (try coming here for lunch during the week. You might as well share the food with people on the adjacent tables) so it's quite comfortable. Char Siu is a must eat. The Chinese almond soup with pig's lung and fish maw is delicious and feels so good for your body. The oyster casserole with green onion and ginger is also delicious. Huge oysters (from the USA) Must try.

When all hotels in town do buffets, the one here stands out by offering a decent range (definitely not as grand as some other hotels in TST) of good-quality food. This is very important because Peninsula Hotel is known for their quality

Abalone
DPDdweller | Jul 8 2011
Preparing dried abalone is a lengthy and tedious process but every step must be done correctly or else the expensive abalone will go to waste. Mr Yeung Koon Yat, the owner, knows how to handle abalone (and all other expensive ingredients) and they really taste miles better than other places. The knife gets stuck in the abalone when you slice it and the inside is a little reddish. That is the sign of good abalone. Another signature dish is the fried rice. Don't underestimate this simple dish; just like abalone, if done right it is excellent. I tried making it at home but the quality is miles apart. The service is very good. After all, this is a Michelin restaurant!
